Warrior Brotherhood
You can’t live well and flourish without it, it’s that simple. Why is brotherhood so important? Why is it so powerful? Just this week I reached out to my warrior brothers for a struggle in my life – I received four texts back and a phone call within minutes from four brothers who said they were fasting, praying, and going to Mass for my intentions. Boom. They were helping me to carry my burden. They were entering into my difficulty to help me. I am blessed with great warrior brotherhood. But why don’t more men have real authentic brotherhood? Lots of reasons I’m sure- I will offer a couple for your reflection. Firstly, and most important, a brother must have the same ordered life as you. He will have different gifts and talents or even vocation but he will have his eyes fixed on Christ and will be traveling the narrow road to Heaven. All men, regardless of vocation, need brotherhood. Christ, by virtue of his incarnation, became a brother to all men. It is Christ within us that would allow us to “lay down our life for our brother.” (1 Jn 3:16).
Without this foundational bond you cannot move to the second phase which grows a bond of
brotherhood- vulnerability. If I hadn’t reached out to my brothers to tell them of my difficulty, maybe
because I didn’t want them to know that I’m not perfect, or strong, or smart, whatever, they would have had no opportunity to enter into my situation and provide help. This is what builds the bond. This is what strengthens the relationship. Now they are free to reach out to me for prayer, or to talk about a difficult situation in their life, or to dig a large hole under their house to try and fix a drain problem...and I can help them carry their burden. This is the key to brotherhood. Christ again is the model of vulnerability – just look at a crucifix. Walk the road to Christ, help a brother along the way. Watch your life change.
